1483 | Ruth could do anything she tried and she was willing to work hard, not caring very much about the "social position" she held as a prominent doctor's wife in the community. She painted the walls and the 12 ft. ceilings, upholstered furniture, made hats, coats and clothes (even formal gowns), knitted, had a huge flower garden with formal beds of iris, peonies, poppies, and lillies of the valley. She raised vegetables and chickens (by the hundreds) during the war, wringing their necks, plucking and cleaning them herself. She and Guy built Courtesy Court Cottages and she ran it each summer for 12 years. She picked wild berries and made jam. She also picked wild mushrooms for cooking. She was part English and loved her "tea parties" each afternoon. Tea was served with milk and sugar as the English did. | Donnely, Ruth (I2499)
