Three Lakes Genealogical Society March 22, 2021 Meeting Minutes If a name in the minutes is underlined, that indicates a “task” that person has offered to complete. Members present: Nancy Bailey(1), Bob Bailey, Nancy Brewster(2), Marie Byatt, Noreen Rossa, Irene Farkas, April Lammert, Les Anderson, Beth Jacobson Call to order 1:02 P.M. The minutes for Feb. 22, 2021 were accepted. TREASURER’S REPORT: The balance is $793.03. The treasurer’s report was accepted. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Nancy 1 attended the "We Are Three Lakes" meeting. VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Marie asked if she should provide interesting websites to members? Yes was the response. SECRETARY’S REPORT: None COMMITTEE REPORTS: Website: Updates and revisions are being made to the obituary and cemetery pages. Les renewed the subscription for the website and considers his paying the bill as a donation to the society. Irene had asked Bob for help in posting someone’s obituary. Our webpage for obituaries states that they come from the Vilas County News Review and the Three Lakes News. Since Irene’s came from a different source, Noreen posted the information on Find A Grave with the family’s permission. She offered to explain to the family why it is not included on our website. In the future, obituaries could be included on the "We Are Three Lakes" website. OLD BUSINESS: ● Recorder for Oral History Project: There are now 2 recorders available at the front desk of the Demmer Library. One is dedicated to TLGS. Anyone working on the Oral History Project may check out the recorder at the library. The Oral History group would like to remind members who are willing, to send Irene names of possible interviewees for their project. Nancy 1 will speak to April about advertising the Oral History Project on the Demmer website and/or newsletter. ● "We Are Three Lakes": The group met last week. The project is currently on hold until the design for the website is set up. When it is up and running Marie has offered to provide training to our group about how to use the site. Les requested receiving the URL when the website is ready so he can include a link on the TLGS website. Nancy 1 suggested that an explanation page about "We Are Three Lakes" also be included on the TLGS website. ● RootsTech: Members who signed up to use this have one year to do the items of interest you checked. Members reported that they have found family members after using what they learned from RootsTech. NEW BUSINESS: ● Kindergarten DNA videos will begin in May. These videos will be the programs for the May, June, August, and September meetings. Video lengths range from 20-50 mins. The information they will provide is current as the videos were done last year. MARCH GENEALOGY TIP: (from Noreen Rossa) If your genealogical research requires looking for information in another country, Google Search in the U.S. that accesses websites through the U.S.-based Google search engine may not be very helpful. The following link from Genealogy in Time magazine tells you how to access Google Search in approximately 192 countries/regions: http://www.genealogyintime.com/articles/country-guide-to-google-search-engines-page3.ht ml BRICK WALLS/SUCCESSES : Beth Jacobson ● There was discussion about how doing research for Swedish ancestors can be difficult. Sweden would change how people’s names were handled periodically. Often civil records will not match church records. Also, when people moved from one farm to another they changed their name. Using church records would be best. Usually, before moving people would get a letter from the clergy in their town and present that letter to the clergy in their new town. ● Quakers had a similar letter system. ● One of our members has been researching Louis Frank. He was a steamboat captain on the Chain of Lakes as well as other rivers in Wisconsin. Marie requested the GEDcom be sent to her so it can be included on the "We Are Three Lakes" website. ● There was a reminder about how helpful land records can be with your searches. ● Sometimes it is helpful to take more than one DNA test. Ancestry uses atDNA (autosomal). One could also use mtDNA which explores the maternal line of family research. ● Someone asked how to find funeral home records if the home is no longer in existence. Suggestions included contacting the county’s genealogy society or using the website for FamilySearch. If the home still exists contacting the local chamber may help find the home’s contact information. ● Another member has been asked by a girl to provide suggestions for finding her birth father. One suggestion included searching geographically. The meeting was adjourned at 2:22 P.M. The next meeting is April 26, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. in the Maple Room at the Demmer Library and on BlueJeans. The topic will probably be "Now is the Time to Plan Your Genealogy Trip - On the Road or Virtual' (postponed from Feb.) and/or there will be a demonstration of the "We are Three Lakes" Project.
