Three Lakes Genealogical Society - February 22, 2021 Meeting Minutes If a name in the minutes is underlined, that indicates a “task” that person has offered to complete. Members present: Bob & Nancy Bailey, Maureen Brand, April Lammert, Nancy Brewster, Irene Farkas, Noreen Rossa,Bev Beyer, Roger & Barbie Blocks, Mari Lynn Garbowicz, Les Anderson, Beth Jacobson Call to order 1:02 P.M. The minutes for January 25, 2021 were accepted. TREASURER’S REPORT: Treasurer’s report was accepted. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Nancy 1 reported that she has been working with the We Are Three Lakes group as well as with Les on updating the website. VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT: No report. SECRETARY’S REPORT: One email was received from a member who has finished their genealogy project. Therefore, they requested to resign from TLGS. It was decided that Beth should re-send minutes of the previous meeting to members when she sends the invite for the next meeting. That way members will remember to review the minutes so they can approve them when asked to do so. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Oral History Project - No interviews were completed during the last month. Irene gave the Demmer her recorder. They uploaded the interviews recorded and made additional copies. Nancy 2volunteered to return the recorder to Irene. The Demmer Library Board approved a mini-grant request to purchase 2 new recorders. The plan is for one to be used by TLGS when needed. The other will be available for people to check out of the Demmer Library. The following is a revision to the original minutes sent to members: The Oral History group is looking for ideas, especially on how to encourage people to sign up to be interviewed. They are asking if you would be interested in helping generate a list of names of potential interviewees. They are specifically looking for people who went to school in the Three Lakes District during the 1940's through the 1970's. You may simply send Irene Farkas any names you can think of, or you could use the following tool to help jog your memory. Visit this website: Three Lakes Telephone Directory < https://www.telephonedirectories.us/Wisconsin/Three_Lakes/ZIP/54562 > The page will show you the telephone directory for people in Three Lakes. Simply scan the directory for names of people you think would be good candidates for the Oral History group to interview. Once you have a list of people generated, please email the list to Irene Farkas. You can find her email address in the member list that was sent to you in January. It was suggested that maybe the Oral History group could send a letter/postcard to each person summarizing the project before calling them. You may contact Irene if you are interested in helping with the Oral History Project. Website - Les Anderson - Les and Nancy 1 have been working together to update the website, specifically finding and uploading missing TLGS meeting minutes. The website is up to date with the meeting minutes that have been given to Les thus far. Les provided today’s meeting participants (in person) with a list of the minutes that are missing. If you are interested in helping, a list of missing minutes is attached to the email containing these minutes. OR, you can simply visit the TLGS website and click on “Past Meeting Minutes”. Anything in green is missing. If you have copies of any missing minutes please email them to Les or Nancy 1. Nancy 2 volunteered to look in the “famous box” to see if there were copies of missing minutes in there. OLD BUSINESS: ● We Are Three Lakes -Bob made a motion to approve TLGS participation in this project by helping to provide genealogy, oral history, cemetery, and obituary information. Nancy 2 seconded. There was some discussion. It was emphasized that our group would only be responsible for the above mentioned aspects. The Historical Society would be responsible for the history. Other Three Lakes groups could help with other information to be compiled. Members approved the motion 9-0. A vote was also taken to approve the name of this project. No new ideas were given. Nancy 2 made a motion to approve We Are Three Lakes. Maureen seconded. Motion carried 8-0. Nancy 1 will contact Erica (Demmer Library) and Kyle McMahon (TLHS) informing them of the approval to participate and acceptance of the name. ● The Library Page (Demmer Library Newsletter) -Members are encouraged to check out this newsletter on the Demmer website each month. TLGS has a page where information of interest to our members will be included. You may contact the Demmer if you would like The Library Page emailed to you each month. ● TLGS members are encouraged to participate in any of the various projects with which our group is involved. Contact a board member if you are interested! ● It was reported that 51 years worth of obituaries have been completed. ● A compliment was given in regard to our group doing genealogy related training at our meetings. It was brought up that the BlueJeans format could be utilized for additional training sessions. It may be helpful to include written directions and possibly record sessions also. A suggestion was given to have a training topic on how to use the ScanPro and Microfilm reader at the Demmer Library. ● If any member does NOT want to receive emails regarding workshops, seminars, and other opportunities related to genealogy, please let Nancy 1 or Beth know. NEW BUSINESS: ● April mentioned the possibility of creating a bookmark for the Oral History project to help market the opportunity. She also is available to make/hang up posters for TLGS. ● RootsTech -They are providing a free learning opportunity available this weekend. An email about it was sent to members. If interested you need to sign up online at FamilySearch OR RootsTech You can also sign up to receive their regular newsletter. ● Microfilm requests from Wisconsin Historical Society - This opportunity is available to the public through the Demmer Library. It is helpful to know which newspaper and/or dates related to the information you are looking for before ordering. You can make an appointment to use The Local History Room and use the microfilm reader. ● Books available at the Demmer Library or through interlibrary loan Birthright (helpful if you have adoptions in your family tree) - at the Demmer Finding Family by Hill - interlibrary loan Unofficial Guide to Ancestry.com - interlibrary loan Unofficial Guide to Ancestry.com Workbook - interlibrary loan BRICK WALLS/SUCCESSES : ● Google searches are an easy way to find information about your family ● Fold3.com is a helpful website when you have people who have served in the military. ● Roger has every issue of Army Times. He is willing to lend them out to people ● If you are wanting to research the female side of a family tree, but there are only male siblings, this can create a brick wall. If you find a way to get around it, but people are not interested in doing a DNA test, that can create a brick wall as well. ● There was discussion about organizing family tree information/artifacts for future generations. For objects one might take photos and write descriptions of what they are and who in the family used them...creating an Heirloom Book. ● TIP: Utilize genealogy magazines to help you with your project. The Demmer has several magazines available for use. Reading about other people’s experiences may help motivate you to work on your genealogy in addition to teaching you how to do it. Nancy Brewster presented information about books that are available in the Local History Room and on the regular shelves of the Demmer Library. She focused on books that provided information about DNA. She suggested that you also look in the juvenile section of the library for genealogy books. Sometimes these books are great as an introduction to a genealogy topic. The other program scheduled, Now is the Time to Plan Your Genealogy Field Trip - On the Road or Virtual was postponed due to illness. The meeting was adjourned around 2:30. The next meeting is March 22, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. The topic will be: I Got My DNA Results - Now What? This discusses DNA results on ancestry.com. It is a video presentation from Brigham Young University.
