April 26, 2021 Meeting Minutes If a name in the minutes is underlined, it indicates a ÒtaskÓ that person has offered to complete. Bob & Nancy Bailey, Nancy Brewster, Noreen Rossa, Marie Byatt, Les Anderson, Irene Farkas, Beth Jacobson, April Lammert Call to order 1:02 P.M. The minutes for March 22, 2021 were accepted. TREASURERÕS REPORT: The treasurerÕs report was accepted. PRESIDENTÕS REPORT: Nancy 1 announced that todayÕs speaker, Diane Rogers, fell ill and would not be presenting ÒStrategies for Scandinavian/Nordic GenealogyÓ today. Nancy 1 will contact the speaker about rescheduling for next year. In addition, Nancy 1 has been working with Les regarding the website and invited members to check out the contents of the TLGS box that is being stored at the Demmer. VICE-PRESIDENTÕS REPORT: None SECRETARYÕS REPORT: TLGS received 2 subscription notices. One is from the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society. They do not send out any reminders for renewal, so TLGS needs to remember the dues need to be paid by Jan. 31st of each year. Beth marked her Dec. calendar as a reminder to ask about maintaining that subscription. The other subscription was for the magazine Internet Genealogy. Members voted unanimously to pay the 1 year subscription of $30 for affiliation with the WSGS and to pay $64.95 for a 3 year subscription to Internet Genealogy. COMMITTEE REPORTS: * Website: Les continues to update and change the website as he receives information. He will continue to do so through May, take a break for the summer, and then start up again in the fall. Les put links to the Demmer and the Three Lakes Historical Society on the TLGS Home page. The goal has been to make the website as user friendly as possible. OLD BUSINESS: * Picnic - July 26, 2021 at Maple Lake Beach pavilion; Nancy 2 has obtained the reservation form, and we can reserve the space at no cost. In case of rain we may use the Maple Room at the Demmer. Discussion included having everyone bring a dish to pass, and it probably isnÕt necessary for TLGS to provide a main course. People felt a regular potluck format would provide plenty of food. NEW BUSINESS: * Resources: 1. TLGS Newsletter - The decision to/not to put our newsletter on the TLGS website was tabled. Originally, the thought was not to do this so the newsletter was a perk for being a member. Other thoughts included: putting it up could recruit new members, if itÕs put online omit personal information of members, and put old newsletter on the website but keep the current ones just for members. A vote will be taken at the next meeting. Feel free to provide input if you have thoughts about this topic. 2. yourdnaquide.com - website to explore all things DNA. Diahan Southard provides videos, there are free webinars, you can sign up for their newsletter, and more 3. isogg.org - (International Society of Genetic Genealogy) 4. familytreemagazine.com/freebie - free resources related to genealogy 5. genealogybargains.com - another site containing free resources 6. Nathan Dylan Goodwin/book club? - Nancy 1 handed out a booklist of Nathan Dylan Goodwin books. They are mystery stories in which the characters use genetic DNA to solve the mystery. If people are interested, the idea of having a TLGS book club was suggested. Let us know what you think! 7. An Oral History project bookmark and poster was created and shared by April. She is asking for feedback about the text and format. Irene received emailed copies. April also let the Oral History group know that she could put together a press release if they wanted one. APRIL GENEALOGY TIP: (from Nancy Brewster) Joining a local genealogical society, such as the Three Lakes Genealogical Society, can be an invaluable support system for experienced and novice researchers. These expert researchers can give advice and answer questions about getting started, organizing research, and overcoming research brick walls. Joining a genealogical society is a great place to find new friends with shared interests. Nancy 2 added that it is helpful to join genealogical groups from other towns, states, or countries. There are societies that are specific to ethnic groups such as the Czechoslovakian Genealogy Society. Even if you donÕt attend meetings you would have access to their newsletters and other resources. BRICK WALLS/SUCCESSES : * Continued discussion about the challenges of searching Scandinavian ancestry * scotlandspeople.gov.uk is a very helpful website if youÕre tracing family in Scotland. You can search for free, but if you want to see actual records you need what are called ÒcreditsÓ. * Another member shared information about the wealth of artifacts they have and how they are going about organizing them * Birthright by Jean A.S. Strauss, is a book TLGS purchased and it is available for checkout (after Beth is done!) It is a guide to search/reunion for adoptees, birthparents, and adoptive parents. Program: Marie provided a video program, In Print - Here, There, and Everywhere which talked about using newspapers for genealogical research. Thanks to Marie for saving the day!!! The meeting was adjourned at 2:55 P.M. The next meeting is May 24, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. in the Maple Room at the Demmer and virtually on BlueJeans. The topic will be ÒDNA Kindergarten, Part 1: Intro and DNA ScienceÓ. The video is presented by Bonnie Belza; Brigham Young University.
