Three Lakes Genealogical Society Minutes – 24 March 2014 Members Present: Les Anderson, Bob and Nancy Bailey, Marge Behling, Maureen Brand, Nancy Brewster, Irene Farkas, Barbara Hacker, Donna Mather, June McDuffie, and Debby Selman There were no guests. Vice-President Debby Selman called the meeting to order. Secretary Nancy Bailey presented the minutes of the 24 February 2014 meeting. They were approved (moved by Donna Mather and seconded by Maureen Brand) as published. Treasurer Nancy Brewster presented the Treasurer’s Report. It was approved (moved by Marge Behling and seconded by Irene Farkas). Old Business: - Nancy Brewster reported a year subscription (to be donated to the library) for Fold3 would be $750 per year. It would be a site license. The members decided to not do this. People needing information from this site are encouraged to contact Nancy/Bob Bailey. - The discussion regarding a summer picnic was tabled until April or May. - Extra SD cards for the obituary project will be kept in the TLGS file cabinet at the library. - Debby would like to form a field trip to Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The month of May would not be possible, so the discussion is tabled until August for a possible trip in September or October. - The obituary project continues. It is easier to have two people do the scanning – one to scan and one to write down the information. If we put the obituary picture on line, how do we derive income from this project? New Business: - Because Nancy Bailey will not be at the meetings in April and June, Maureen Brand has volunteered to act as secretary at those meetings. - Note the May meeting is scheduled for May 19 (not May 26). - Demmer Library sent a thank you for the book Czech American Timeline… by Miloslav Rechcigi. The book was donated in memory of Dan Petras. Successes and Brick Walls: - Maureen, Marge, and Donna shared their genealogical difficulties. - Ideas were to “google,” use another person’s tree for hints, use wiki-tree, and churches. Adjournment: Les Anderson motioned and Nancy Brewster seconded for adjournment. The motion was passed. Program: Members Helping Members Other Discussion: - Worldcat.org: It is possible to request books from other libraries. If the book can’t be sent to Demmer Library, you may request pages. Contact Nancy Brewster. There is a charge for copies. Also, if the book still has a copyright, you must request less than 50 pages. - The Library of Congress has a catalog of all published books. - Some books can be purchased on a “print on demand” basis. Search your book on books.google.com. Click on “Get Print Book.” When you go to a site such as AbeBooks, see if there is a” print on demand” option. The next meeting is at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 21 at Demmer Library. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Bailey From the Obituary Project Committee: Three groups are being formed to work on this project. Each group will consist of two scanners (one scans and one writes the information) and a person who will edit the scans on PhotoShop. Once the PhotoShop editing is completed, that data will be given to Bob Bailey. The participating groups still are forming, but might be - Nancy Bailey, Irene Farkas and June McDuffie - Maureen Brand, June McDuffie (?) and Debby Selman - Les Anderson, Charlene Roberts (?) and ?
