Minutes of the Three Lakes Genealogical Society Meeting June 27, 2011 - 1:00 PM at the Demmer Library Present: Marie Byatt, Maureen Brand, Nancy Brewster, Irene Farkas, Marilyn Geisman, Mary Hitchcock, Sheila Hittman, Robert Killick, Charlene Roberts, Noreen Rossa, Debby Selman, Noreen Rossa, Colleen Thompson. Guests: Nancy & Robert Bailey. President Debby Selman called meeting to order and welcomed guests. Those present introduced themselves. Maureen Brand reviewed the minutes from the May 23, 2011 meeting. Minutes were approved as read, motion was seconded to accept them. TreasurerÕs report was tabled until July meeting, as Treasurer, Ann Bruckmoser, was out of town. New/Old Business: 1. Debby had not received any other ideas other than the purchase of a printer for the local history room, for use of some TLGS funds. However, Nancy Brewster reported that networking of all library printers to one primary machine would make that idea unnecessary. Debby welcomes any other ideas for use of the funds. 2. Nancy reported on the trip of 4 members to the Madison Library . They enjoyed using vital statistics resources at the library. A new library resource is the Scan-pro (digital microfiche) readers instead of the old microfiche readers, a big improvement. 3 or 4 are available for use. 3. Roger Blocks volunteered to chair the October trip to the Allen County Library. If you have interest in going or have questions please contact Roger. 4. Nancy Brewster has pulled off a list of books in the Demmer Library that have a genealogy connection. She will leave a copy of the list in the local history room for people to review. 5. Nancy mentioned that the Family History Center in SLC may soon use the internet for ordering microfiche to be sent out, and people would be able to pay with a credit card. At this time they are not sure if our library will be able to use this, or if the ordering like this can only be done at LDS Church Libraries. 6. Marie Byatt said the LDS libraries make many of the premium genealogy websites available for free, but come with your thumb drive to download info, as users need to use LDS Computers to access those sites. 7. Charlene Roberts got an inquiry for information on the Lavry family from the 1930s here in Three Lakes. Another man from Poland made an inquiry on the Tryczak family. 8. Successes-- Brick Walls: a. Marie Byatt found a connection to a woman in Germany who is MarieÕs motherÕs second cousin.. 2 of the relatives had come to Milwaukee and 1 stayed in Germany. b. Mary Hitchcock spent a month in Ireland and had been looking for Keogh family information and used the Griffith valuation (ask about Ireland.com). She spent 3 frigid hours in a rectory and thought she might find more in the National Library in Dublin. She then went to the valuation office in Dublin and found that they had 1850 and later valuations. MaryÕs lead did not pan out, and she was a Òcold caseÓ investigator and eliminated some suspects. Mary put a lot of miles on their trip in Ireland.. Their threesome rented a cottage in County Tipperary and had a wonderful trip. c. Nancy Brewster got a lead on her Ahlmann family in Germany through Ancestry.com. 9. TL chamber accidentally put info out that TLGS was holding a cemetery walk(would conflict with Eagle River GS cemetery walk on July 9th) . Mary Hitchhock will have the Chamber put out a correction saying it was a mistake and that TLGS Cemetery Walk books are available for a self-guided tour. The books are available for sale at the TL Chamber or Demmer Library. 10. Mary Hitchcock led a discussion on the TL Cemetery Walk for next year(we had been doing it every other year). 1st one was huge, second was much smaller, and 3rd one had about 75 participants. Mary would not volunteer to do be the primary facilitator again, but a 2012 Walk will be discussed at the next meeting. There was a motion to adjourn the business meeting. It was seconded and passed. An Educational Program was presented by Charlene Roberts: Creating Gedcom files from a Personal Ancestry File(PAF).: Handouts were distributed. Educational Program at the July 25th meeting: Marie Byatt will lead a discussion on Using Family Search and Upcoming Changes that will soon be implemented. She suggested everyone should register and develop a login for the website , as the LDS church - will be soon putting all family trees in the Mormon church online, so these may provide a lot of new leads.
